Udayakumar holds a degree in management and has previously been the deputy leader of the Ceylon Workers' Congress. Presently, he is a member of the National Union of Workers and was elected to the Parliament of Sri Lanka in 2020 as part of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya electoral alliance.
