Reverend Father Mariampillai Xavier Karunaratnam was a Sri Lankan Tamil and a Roman Catholic parish priest known for his activism in human rights. He served as the Chairperson of the National Evangelical Society of Human Rights (NESOHR) and was vocal against injustices faced by minorities in Sri Lanka. Tragically, he was killed on April 20, 2008, allegedly by the Sri Lankan Army's Deep Penetration Unit, prompting NESOHR to strongly condemn the assassination and the actions of the Sri Lankan state.
