He served as the chairman of the board for Hoornbeeck College and Van Lodenstein College until March 2012. His career began as a Dutch language and commercial knowledge teacher at Van Lodenstein. He was active in local politics, serving as a council member and alderman in Maartensdijk, and then as a member of the Provincial States of Utrecht until 2007. In 2011, he became the SGP party chairman and focused on promoting the party's visibility.
