He is notable for his work with the band Superchunk, which began in 1989, and for his project Portastatic, which started in the early 1990s. In addition to his musical endeavors, McCaughan founded Merge Records in 1989 alongside his Superchunk bandmate Laura Ballance, contributing to the independent music scene.
