Madhav Dhananjaya Gadgil is an Indian ecologist and academic, born on May 24, 1942. He founded the Centre for Ecological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science. Gadgil served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and led the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel in 2010, known as the Gadgil Commission. He is recognized for his contributions to environmental science, receiving both the Volvo Environment Prize and the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. The Indian government has honored him with Padma Shri (1981) and Padma Bhushan (2006).
