He became the CEO of Novo Nordisk Foundation in March 2021, after serving as the Executive Vice President for research and development at Novo Nordisk for 20 years. He led the company’s development of numerous medicinal products, particularly in diabetes treatment, and contributed to innovative research in GLP-1 and oral medication. Thomsen was chairman of the board at the University of Copenhagen from 2017 to 2019, and he received the Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in December 2022.
