Carl Magnus Elias Fries was a Swedish botanist, born on March 28, 1917, in Engelbrekts, Stockholm. He served as a professor and was the chairman of the Swedish Linnean Society from 1980 to 1985. Fries was an associate professor in plant biology at Uppsala University from 1951 to 1963, and in 1963, he became a laboratory head in forest northern plant geography at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. He was the son of botanist Robert Elias Fries and the grandson of botanist Thore Magnus Fries.
