Mahmud Bakhit al-Rabi'i (born January 15, 1932) is an Egyptian literary critic and academic. He was born in the town of Jahina, Sohag in Upper Egypt. Initially a poet until 1960, he pivoted to literary criticism. He graduated from Dar Al-Uloom in 1958 and earned his PhD from the University of London in 1965. He has taught at various universities including Cairo, Algeria, Kuwait, and the American University in Cairo, and has written several works in criticism, studies, translations, and a trilogy of autobiographies.
