Makoto Ōoka (February 16, 1931 - April 5, 2017) was a prominent Japanese poet, playwright, and journalist, recognized as one of the key poets of the second half of the 20th century. He was the son of Akira Ōoka, a recipient of the Akutagawa Prize. For over twenty years, Ōoka penned a daily poetry column in the Asahi Shimbun. Born in Mishima, Shizuoka, he graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1953 and gained fame with his debut poetry collection, 'Memories and Present' in 1956. He significantly contributed to the revival of collaborative Japanese classical poetry and opened a literary museum devoted to his work in 2009.
