He emerged from the underground theater movement of the 1960s and played a significant role in founding the Black Tent Theatre in Tokyo. Satō achieved success with Brecht-influenced plays like 'Ismene' and 'My Beatles,' touring Japan with his troupe since the 1970s. He also engaged in collaborative projects with other leftist theater groups. Additionally, he staged avant-garde Japanese plays and directed Alban Berg's opera 'Wozzeck' in Avignon in 1995.
