He served as the Minister for various departments including Health, Tourism, and Sports in the Government of Puducherry. Notably, he was the first individual from Yanam to hold ministerial office in 2006. Rao has contested elections as both an Independent and an Indian National Congress candidate, earning recognition as a key figure in Puducherry politics.
