Manfred E. Streit was a prominent German economist born on February 16, 1939, in Goch. He studied at the University of the Saarland and worked with Herbert Giersch. He habilitated at the University of Mannheim and joined the University of Freiburg in 1990, focusing on research in the tradition of Friedrich August von Hayek. In 1993, he founded the Max Planck Institute for Economics in Jena, where he became an emeritus member in 2000. He was involved with several economics organizations and served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry of Economics from 1989 to 2009.
