Emmanuel Lionel Mercer (1928-1959) was an English thoroughbred horse racing jockey and brother of jockey Joe Mercer. He gained fame for winning the inaugural Washington, D.C. International in 1952 and captured the 1,000 Guineas Stakes on Happy Laughter in 1953. In 1954, he won 88 races, including the 2,000 Guineas Stakes on Darius. His career was tragically cut short when he died from injuries sustained in a fall at Ascot Racecourse in 1959, leading to a legacy remembered as one of Britain's brightest race riders.
