Manuel Alvar López (1923-2001) was a notable Spanish philologist and dialectologist, recognized for his extensive research on regional dialects, particularly the Riojan dialect and the Aragonese language. He studied Philosophy and Letters at the University of Zaragoza and earned his doctorate at the University of Madrid. His influential works include 'El habla del campo de Jaca' and 'Manual de dialectología hispánica'. A member of the Royal Spanish Academy since 1974, he served as its director from 1988 to 1991. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of History and the father of philologist Manuel Alvar Ezquerra.
