Manuel Álvarez Zalba was a Spanish military officer, born on December 5, 1919, in El Pardo. He entered the army on July 17, 1936, and fought in the Spanish Civil War as a lieutenant. He ascended to the rank of general in 1983 and became commander of the V Military Region. Zalba was known for his outspoken views, particularly against political reforms he perceived as weakening Spain's military capacity. He was dismissed from his position in 1984 after critical comments about the government's military reforms. He passed away on June 11, 2001, in Madrid.
