Manuel Castells Oliván (born February 9, 1942) is a prominent Spanish sociologist known for his research in the fields of information society, communication, and globalization. He was appointed Minister of Universities in Spain in January 2020. Castells is a professor at the Open University of Catalonia, and holds prestigious positions at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Berkeley. He has been recognized as one of the most cited social scientists and won the 2012 Holberg Prize for his contributions to understanding urban and global political dynamics in networked societies.
