Marc Merger is the first person to have his damaged spinal cord bridged by an electronic implant. He became paralyzed in 1990 after falling asleep while driving. Grieving for a breakthrough in restoring movement, he participated in the European project 'Stand up and walk' where a microchip and cables were to be implanted to control his leg muscles. Although successful to some extent in 2000, full mobility remains elusive. Merger has shared his journey in the book 'Lève-toi et marche' and has continued to work in academia.
