Marcel Kurpershoek is a Dutch orientalist and diplomat born on May 17, 1949. He studied Arabic at Leiden University and Cairo University and has served in the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1974, leading the Middle East department. He has held positions at the United Nations and NATO, and has conducted research on Bedouin society in Saudi Arabia. He is also a professor of Arabic language and Islamic culture. Kurpershoek has served as the Dutch ambassador to Turkey, Pakistan, and Poland and authored 'The Last Bedouin' among other works.
