He taught art history at the State University of New York from the 1950s to the 1970s. In the 1980s, he served as an advisor to Culture Minister Karel Poma. He co-founded the Museum of Contemporary Art (MuHKA) in Antwerp in 1987 and was its board chairman until 1991. Van Jole published about forty monographs on contemporary artists and organized numerous exhibitions, and he was active in several art organizations.
