He is a commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit and a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences as well as the National Academy of Medicine. Additionally, he is a retired and emeritus professor of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and a retired professor at the University of São Paulo.
