Marcelo Damy de Souza Santos was a Brazilian experimental nuclear physicist born on July 14, 1914, in Campinas. He transitioned from electrical engineering to physics under Gleb Wataghin at the University of São Paulo. After studying at Cambridge, he researched sonar for the Brazilian Navy during World War II. He was instrumental in launching Latin America's first particle accelerator and nuclear reactor. Damy was a founding member of the Institute for Nuclear Energy Research in Brazil and served as its director from 1956 to 1961. He also became a professor at various institutions and remained active in research until his retirement.
