Margaret Charles Smith was an influential African-American midwife known for her remarkable skills, delivering over 3000 babies during her career, which lasted more than thirty years. Working primarily in rural Alabama, she successfully cared for women often in poor health, having no maternal fatalities. In 1949, she became one of the first licensed midwives in Green County and continued her practice until traditional midwifery was outlawed in 1976. She published her memoir in the 1990s and was honored in 2010 by her induction into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame.
