Margaret Hamilton is an American computer scientist, systems engineer, and business owner born on August 17, 1936. She served as the Director of the Software Engineering Division at MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, where she developed onboard flight software for NASA's Apollo program. Hamilton founded two software companies: High Precision Software in 1976 and Hamilton Technologies in 1986 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has published over 130 research papers and is credited with coining the term 'software engineering.' In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama on November 22, 2016.
