Margaret Marie Heckler, born Margaret O'Shaughnessy on June 21, 1931, is a Republican politician from Massachusetts. She served in the U.S. House of Representatives for eight terms from 1967 to 1983. Later, she was appointed as the Secretary of Health and Human Services and served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland under President Ronald Reagan. Heckler was defeated in the 1982 congressional election, and it wasn't until 2007 that another woman, Niki Tsongas, was elected to Congress from Massachusetts.
