Margaret Mahy (March 21, 1936 - July 23, 2012) was a New Zealand author of children's and young adult literature. Many of her storylines feature strong supernatural elements, yet her writing emphasizes themes of human relationships and growth. Over her career, she wrote more than 100 picture books, 40 novels, and 20 collections of short stories. At the time of her death, she was one of thirty writers awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for her lifelong contribution to children's literature. Her notable works include 'A Lion in the Meadow' and 'The Changeover'.
