She was the lifelong partner of writer Karin Boye, with whom she lived from 1934 until Boye's death in 1941. Of Jewish descent, she emigrated to Sweden with Boye's help after the Nazis came to power in 1933. In Sweden, Hanel trained as a bookbinder and started training as a childcare worker. She committed suicide shortly after Boye's own suicide.
