Maria van Daalen, also known by her pen name Maria Machelina de Rooij, is a Dutch poet and writer born on July 8, 1950, in Voorburg. She studied at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Iowa, where she participated in the International Writing Program. An expert in voodoo, she became a 'Mambo vudú' in Haiti in 2007. She has advised on voodoo art exhibitions and published her first poetry collection, 'Raveslag,' in 1987, which was nominated for the C. Buddingh Prize. Her poems have been translated into multiple languages.
