Maria von Trapp, born in Vienna in 1905 as Maria Augusta Kutschera, was an Austrian author known for her autobiographical works about her musical family. She sold the rights for her story to Wolfgang Reinhardt for $9,000, leading to the production of two successful German-language films depicting her family's life. One of these films was adapted into the American musical film 'The Sound of Music' in 1965, based on her 1949 book. The film became one of the biggest box office successes in the U.S. and won an Oscar for Best Cinematography.
