She studied at the École normale supérieure de jeunes filles from 1953 to 1957 and earned her teaching diploma in physics in 1957. Bouchiat worked at Princeton University between 1957 and 1959 and obtained her PhD in 1964. Notably, she proposed a test for parity violation in atomic physics with her husband Claude in 1974 and confirmed this experimentally in cesium in 1982. She is a member of various scientific academies and has received several prestigious awards throughout her career.
