She completed her B.A. in English with a French minor at the University of Iowa in 1999, and went on to earn her M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Harvard University in 2003 and 2006, respectively. Rutkoski lives in Brooklyn, where she shares her home with her family and two cats, Cloud and Firefly.
