Mario Conejo Maldonado is an Ecuadorian sociologist and politician of Kichwa ethnicity, born on June 25, 1959, in Peguche, Otavalo. He served as the mayor of Otavalo from 2000 to 2014 and again from 2019 to 2023, being the first indigenous mayor of the city. He co-founded the indigenous movement Pachakutik but left in 2006 due to ideological differences, later joining Rafael Correa's PAIS party. He is also the brother of writer Ariruma Kowii.
