Mario Onaindia was a Basque politician and novelist, a member of ETA in the 1960s who later became a leader of Euskadiko Ezkerra and served as a Basque parliamentarian for the Socialist Party of Euskadi. He joined the political-military faction of ETA, advocating for political engagement over armed struggle. He opposed terrorism publicly, served in the Basque Parliament from 1980 to 1990, and became a senator in 1993. He died from intestinal cancer in 2003 and was awarded the Order of Constitutional Merit posthumously.
