Stamps played a pivotal role in the election of Harold Washington, Chicago's first African-American mayor, through a significant voter registration drive. She was vocal about the poor living conditions in public housing and worked with gang leaders to address violence. Her most notable achievement was facilitating the only citywide gang truce in Chicago's history in 1994.
