Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she studied at Radcliffe College and Wellesley College. Grene taught at the University of California, Davis, and later became a Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Virginia Tech. She was one of the first philosophers to question synthetic theory of evolution, and in 2002 became the first female philosopher featured in the Library of Living Philosophers.
