His leadership extended to the American Society of Magazine Editors and NBC News as a senior vice president. At CNN Worldwide, he held the role of executive vice president and managing editor. Whitaker has authored several influential books, including biographies and works on African-American history, and was recognized by Essence magazine as one of the 25 most influential African-Americans in 2008.
