Markus Büttiker (July 18, 1950 – October 4, 2013) was a Swiss physicist renowned for his contributions to mesoscopic semiconductor physics. He earned his diploma in theoretical physics from ETH Zurich in 1974 and completed his doctorate at the University of Basel in 1978. Büttiker worked at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center and was later a professor at the University of Geneva. He received the IBM Prize for his groundbreaking work on the Aharonov-Bohm effect and the Quantum Hall effect. His work led to the development of the Landauer-Büttiker theory.
