Dorrestein began drumming at a young age, inspired by the early music of The Beatles, and later switched to electric guitar, starting to write songs. He attended Baarnsch Lyceum and the pop music program at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with his childhood friend Jelte Tuinstra.
