She served as a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for the Labor Party from 2006 to 2018, representing the Footscray electoral district. Prior to this, she was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1999 to 2006. Notably, Thomson holds the distinction of being the first female Jewish minister in Australia.
