Mart de Groot is a Dutch astronomer born on November 13, 1938, in Leiden. He worked at the University Observatory Utrecht until 1970, where he earned his doctorate in 1969 studying P Cygni. He continued his career at the European Southern Observatory in La Silla, Chile, until 1976. Following this, he took a position at the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland, where he served as director from 1976 to 1994 until his retirement in 2001. His main research focus was on variable stars.
