Marta Casals Istomin, born on November 2, 1936, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, is a distinguished cellist, teacher, and artistic director in classical music. A member of a family of amateur musicians, she began cello studies in New York on a scholarship. She trained with Pau Casals, whom she married in 1957. Together they established the Casals Festival in San Juan and founded the Conservatory of Puerto Rico. After Casals' death, she continued his legacy and held prominent positions, including director at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She has received numerous accolades, including the Creu de Sant Jordi.
