He began his career in journalism in 1959 with the newspaper El País, where he became editor-in-chief in 1986 and later the director in 1996. He also worked with various other publications, including Reporter and Mundo Color. In addition to his journalistic contributions, he participated in human rights congresses in Portugal and Mexico in the 1990s, receiving the Legión del Libro from the Cámara Uruguaya del Libro in 2001.
