Martin J. Buerger was an American crystallographer and professor of Mineralogy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He invented the precession camera for X-ray crystallography experiments. An accomplished author, he wrote a dozen books and monographs, as well as over two hundred articles. He was awarded the Arthur L. Day Medal by the Geological Society of America in 1951. The mineral buergerite is named after him, and the American Crystallographic Association established the 'M.J. Buerger Prize' in his honor.
