He served as organist and music director at Winchester Cathedral from 1972 to 1988, then at Westminster Abbey from 1988 to 1998. Neary expanded traditional choral repertoire and commissioned works from composers like John Tavener. He led significant performances, including the funeral service of Diana, Princess of Wales, for which he was appointed LVO. Despite his achievements, he was dismissed from Westminster Abbey over financial misconduct in 1998, though his musical skills remained undisputed.
