Martin Rasmussen Hjelmen was a Norwegian sailor and communist activist born on January 24, 1904, in Herdla, Øygarden. He began working at sea at the age of fifteen and spent time in Australia during the 1920s. After returning to Norway, he settled in Ski. He led the Norwegian branch of the Wollweber League from 1936 to 1938. Arrested in Sweden in 1940 and later handed to the Gestapo, Hjelmen was sentenced to death and executed in Brandenburg on May 30, 1944. He was also the first leader of the Osvald Group until 1938.
