He became a professor at TU/e in 1978 and served as the rector from 1996 to 2001. Additionally, he was the first scientific director of the Embedded Systems Institute from 2001 to 2004. Rem was awarded the title of Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau shortly before his death in 2008.
