Martin Swope (born June 1, 1955) is an influential American musician and composer known for his role as a tape manipulator and sound engineer for the post-punk band Mission of Burma from 1979 to 1983. He pioneered sound manipulation techniques during live performances, using a reel-to-reel tape machine to record and alter sounds in real-time, creating unique auditory experiences. His work was inspired by composers like John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Swope later joined the band Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, contributing to their albums until 1993. He is known for his integral but often unrecognized contributions to music.
