He earned his BMus (1991) and BMus (Hons) (1992) with distinction from Potchefstroom University, followed by a MMus at the University of Cape Town. He studied under Peter Klatzow and later under Paul Petterson at the Royal Academy of Music, earning an advanced diploma in composition. Watt has taught music theory at several universities, including the University of Pretoria, and has researched historical musicology. He has also contributed to the selection of a new anthem for the African Union.
