He represented Slettås IL and had notable performances, including finishing 24th in the combined event and 38th in the 18 km cross-country at the 1934 World Championships in Sollefteå. In 1935, he secured 6th place in the Holmenkollen combined event. Østbu's team from Sør-Østerdal skikrets won the title for best three-member team in the combined event, earning the Norges Skiforbunds kretspokal at the national championships in 1933.
