Martti Ahtisaari was the 10th President of Finland from 1994 to 2000 and served as the UN special envoy for Kosovo's future status starting in November 2005. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008 for his decades-long efforts in international conflict resolution. Ahtisaari founded the Crisis Management Initiative in 2000 and was pivotal in peace negotiations, notably resulting in the 2005 peace agreement between the Indonesian government and former separatist rebels in Aceh. His diplomatic successes also included aiding Namibia's peaceful path to independence and mediating in Northern Ireland.
