Mary Agnes McCarthy was an Australian police officer, born on 8 March 1903. She was one of the first women in the South Australia Police and its twelfth female recruit. Educated at Catholic schools, she qualified as a nurse before joining the police in 1929. While primarily tasked with handling female prisoners, she learned ju-jitsu and was issued a pistol. McCarthy retired in 1960 and later became a welfare officer for the Supreme Court. She passed away on 3 April 1978, at the age of 75.
